Need help in identifying the material this black hat is made from

Hi- just discovered the wealth of data on this website. Truely amazing. Hoping you all can help me. I just acquired this beautiful black ladies hat and am trying to identify the material. At first I thought it was a brushed wool, but kind of resembles a short hair and is very soft (feels soft like my cat) .

Nice find! I especially love the special lining which you do not see on many of Mr. John's hats.

The hat is made of imported European fur-felt. Probably Swiss or Austrian in origin, but it could be from Italy or France. So it is made of real fur, but it is not a fur pelt or animal skin. Probably made of rabbit fur and a blend of nutria, or other sleek furred animal. The long nap is create by a special manufacturing process that lengthens out the felt fibers, to imitate a fur pelt, so it often gets confused for "real" fur or faux fur. Yours has a panne or mirror finish to the fur-felt.
